Solarban 70XL glass wins Western Pennsylvania Environmental Award

Solarban 70XL solar control low-emissivity (low-e) glass by PPG's performance glazings business s won a 2007 Western Pennsylvania Environmental Award, cosponsored by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Dominion Gas.

Solarban 70XL glass represents a major industry innovation because it transmits 63 percent of the sun's natural light while blocking 73 percent of its solar energy. The resulting light-to-solar gain (LSG) ratio of 2.37 represents a performance enhancement of 29 percent over the previous top-of-the-line solar control low-e glass.

The Western Pennsylvania Environmental Awards recognize outstanding various environmental accomplishments throughout western Pennsylvania. The awards include cash prizes of $5,000 to be donated to local nonprofit environmental organizations designated by each winner. PPG's prize winnings was donated to Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, where Solarban 70XL glass is used throughout the gardens’ new visitors center.

Metal of Honor Award

PPG Industries was named a "Metal of Honor" winner by Metal Roofing magazine. According to the magazine, the company was selected by attendees of the 2007 METALCON trade show and readers as one of the metal roofing industry’s top companies in terms of quality of products, service, delivery and competitive pricing.

PPG manufactures Duranar fluoropolymer coatings, one of the industry’s best-known brands for protecting and beautifying metal building components. The product line includes Duranar SPF infrared(IR)-reflective coatings, which help metal roofs reflect rather than absorb the sun’s heat, lowering air-conditioning costs, improving comfort for building occupants and reducing urban heat island effect.

Because Duranar SPF coatings are available in many light, medium and dark colors, they offer environmentally-conscious architects design flexibility and the energy performance needed to meet rigorous “green ” building standards.

Shades of Green Award

Mike Rupert accepts the 2007 Green Shades Award.
Michael L. Rupert, director, performance glazings technical services and product development, PPG Industries won the 2007 Shades of Green Leadership Award from the Green Building Alliance in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Rupert was recognized for his leadership of the PPG team that developed Solarban 70XL solar control low-emissivity glass. Introduced in 2005 at U.S. Green Building Council’s International GreenBuild Conference, Solarban 70XL glass offered a major advance in glass technology with its unprecedented combination of solar control and visible light transmittance in a transparent, color-neutral glass.

Researchers honored with 2008 Carnegie Science Award

Paul Medwick, James Thiel and Andrew Wagner, senior research associates at PPG's Harmar, Pa., glass technology center, were named winners in the 2008 Carnegie Science Awards, recognizing their leadership in the development of Solarban 70XL solar control, low-emissivity (low-e) glass. Their award recognizes accomplishments in the use of innovative processes and technology to achieve extraordinary levels of process control and product quality, and the program recognizes and promotes outstanding science and technology achievements in Western Pennsylvania.

PPG recognized by EPA Climate Leaders program

As part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders program since March 2007, PPG committed to reducing its total energy intensity by 25 percent between 2006 and 2016 and its global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 10 percent between 2006 and 2011. The program is an industry-government partnership that helps companies to develop climate-change strategies. PPG already achieved a GHG emission-reduction goal, by 18 percent in the United States from a 2002 baseline, six years earlier than its 2012 target date.

Climate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Partner companies commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of their greenhouse gas emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals, and annually reporting their progress to EPA. Through program participation, companies create a credible record of their accomplishments and receive EPA recognition as corporate environmental leaders.

PPG receives Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers Partners for Change Award

The Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers recognized PPG and packaging manufacturers that aided in the commercial development of Bairocade gas barrier coatings in 2000 for participating in a program to test new bottle compositions with plastics recyclers. Bairocade coatings by PPG are applied to the exterior of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, extending the shelf life and freshness of consumer food products. PET treated with Bairocade coatings can be recycled into fiber, strapping, sheet and even food and beverage containers because the coating is removed during the grind-and-wash phases typical of recycling plants.
