PPG was one of the first packaging coatings manufacturers to address can makers' concerns about environmental and health issues related to coatings containing polyvinyl chloride (vinyl).

PPG2466 vinyl-free coating

PPG2466 vinyl-free internal coating, developed by Courtaulds, which PPG acquired, has been used successfully on internal easy-open ends (EOE) for beer and beverage aluminum cans for more than five years.

New product development

PPG continues to develop coatings that allow can makers to have the product performance they need while addressing important environmental concerns. An excellent example of an end lacquer that addresses several environmental concerns, including PVC, is new PPG2489 beer and beverage EOE internal lacquer.

Features and benefits of PPG2489 beer and beverage EOE internal lacquer, based on low-odor solvent blend:

• PVC-free
• Epoxy-free
• BADGE-free
• Bisphenol-A-free
• NOGE (Novolac glycidyl ether)-free

PPG2489 is undergoing commercial line trials and scale up in Europe.

'Universal' end coating

PPG7570 is a PVC-free internal for beer, beverage, hot fill and retortable aluminum EOEs.

PPG7570 is unique:

• It performs well as an internal and external coating
• It has demonstrated performance over non-chrome treatments, including organic and cleaned-only substrates.

Since our PPG7570 vinyl-free coating can also be used as an exterior coat for aluminum easy-open ends, it simplifies purchasing and application.

The product also meets US FDA and European regulatory requirements, has Canadian HPB approval, and is BADGE compliant for EU countries and BPA compliant.

In comparison testing with competitive vinyl-free products, PPG's PPG7570 vinyl-free coating was shown to have:

• Superior feathering resistance for ring pull
• Very good flexibility
• Good flavor and odor-resistance properties

Additionally, it can be tinted to permit color differentiation on internal and external application.

Our PPG7570 end coating is performing exceptionally well on high-speed lines in the United States, Europe and Australia.

Electrocoat

PPG's electrocoat products in clear and gold for aluminum beer can ends are unique environmentally compliant coatings. In more than 15 years of use by a major aluminum can end maker, PPG's electrocoat products and process have protected and decorated nearly 300 billion beer can ends.

New developments are under way for electrocoat products that address other environmental issues, such as HAPs compliance and non-post lube stamping performance.
