Low VOC
Environmentally friendly solutions that deliver
PPG is the global industry leader in developing environmentally friendly coatings that perform as well as or even better than solvent-based coatings. PPG's unique understanding and long time experience in this marketplace have proved to be of value in developing low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) packaging coatings as this issue has become increasingly important for can makers.
Most packaging coatings use solvent as the medium to carry the paint solids. However, solvents are expensive and invariably flammable, and can cause some air emission problems even if incineration is employed during the curing coatings.
PPG has developed three primary approaches to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC):
- Powder technology, where no solvent is used.
- Water-based technology, where some or all solvent is replaced by water.
- UV-cured coatings that eliminate the need for solvent.
We have experience working with can makers around the world to develop low-VOC or near-zero-VOC coatings.
Our powder coating product has been successfully used for internal side-seam stripe protection of food cans for many years.
As can makers specify ever lower requirements for VOC while demanding even higher performance at lower cost, PPG has stepped up to the challenge.
