As a complete source for packaging coatings, PPG produces sealing compounds and related adhesives for crown corks, aluminum and plastic caps for bottles; lug cap internal systems for jars and bottles, and sealing compounds for general line lids. Vinyl-based and vinyl-free formulations allow cap and lid makers to select the products that meet specific application and environmental requirements.
For lug cap and crown cap applications, adhesives are developed to work with the sealing compounds for ease in application and purchasing, while optimizing processing and performance. Liquid and granular vinyl-based and granular vinyl-free compound formulations are produced to enable processors to apply them with existing machinery for achieving maximum line efficiency.

Vinyl-based Compounds in Food Closures
Vinyl-based compounds in liquid and granules offer processors the ability to select the formulation that best meets their requirements.
For sterilization applications undergoing high temperature and pressure, PPG offers an unrivaled internal system that includes the metal base coat, adhesive and liquid vinyl-based compound. This unique system delivers the industry's best performance, and is especially beneficial in food packaging because of high resistance to attack by acid packs and sulfur. It has successfully demonstrated ability to withstand high temperatures in sterilization of 132° C, 2.2 - 3 bar pressure for 60 minutes.
PPG has a two-component liquid vinyl-based system for lug caps in sterilizing applications.
Vinyl-based Sealing Compound for General Line
Even under adverse conditions sealing compounds have to withstand the impact of transportation and chemical attack of filled goods (paints, solvents, fatty foods). Answering this demand, we offer a wide variety of products, mainly in formed versions in order to provide for the best possible elasticity and safety. The strength is visible especially in contact with plasticizer extracting solvents.
Vinyl-free Granulated Compounds
Long active in development of environmentally friendly products, PPG has sealing compounds for General Line that provide the needed barrier and longevity performance requirements in vinyl-free formulations. PPG's well-known Flexil® compound is an easy-to-use product that can be applied with existing machinery for crowns production.
Products also are formulated to meet growing BADGE requirements for European processors as well as those with alternative plasticizers.
Crown caps
To meet the unique and important needs of crown cap applications, PPG has compounds that are easy to apply with traditional rotation and injection manufacturing techniques as well as state-of-the-art extrusion technology. Being able to supply adhesives designed for use with these specific compounds further simplifies purchasing and application while assuring the best results.
New phthalate-free compounds have recently been developed, and are available for commercial sale.
