FAQ

Here is a list of our most frequently asked questions.

What is a Kynar coating?
Kynar 500® is the trade name for the fluoropolymer resin in PPG’s Duranar® Coatings. It is PVDF and comprised 70% of the resin in Duranar. The remaining 30% is a proprietary acrylic resin.

Do you have to be certified to spray Kynar/Hylar coatings?
Yes. PPG requires that applicators be approved in order to purchase and apply Duranar.

What are the criteria for Duranar Coatings certification?
There are several. First the customer needs a multi-stage pretreatment system consisting of a Chrome-Phosphate conversion coating. (Non-chrome is currently not acceptable). Second, the customer needs to be able to apply the coating either by conventional or electrostatic atomization methods. Third, the customer needs to be able to bake the coating for 10-15 minutes in an oven that can reach 500-550 degrees F.

How do I become certified?
Once the PPG representative has determined that the potential customer meets the minimum requirements, he or she will send the customer an information packet. This packet includes documentation on the certification procedure, line survey, AAMA specifications, and products. Once the line survey is completed and returned, it will be evaluated. If the line survey is acceptable, PPG will supply the customer with some Duranar® in order to prepare testing panels. The panels are prepared by the customer, returned to PPG Springdale, and placed into testing. If the panels successfully pass all of the AAMA 2605 tests, the customer becomes an approved applicator. They will also be listed on the web site.

How long does the testing take?
Preliminary test take 1 to 2 days. The salt spray and humidity test take 4000 hours. (Approx 6 months.)

Do I need to re-certify?
Yes. PPG requires that customers supply panels for testing at least once per year.

What is AAMA?
AAMA stands for the American Architectural Manufacturers Association. The specification is voluntary and developed by representative members of AAMA as advisory information and published as a public service.

How many AAMA specifications are there?
There are three that are relevant to extrusion coatings. These are AAMA 2603, 2604, and 2605. Only Duranar meets the 2605 specification.

Can I get any color I want in Duranar Coatings?
No. Some bright, high chroma colors are not available in the Duranar system.

Can I purchase metallic colors?
Yes. Metallic coatings are available, but always require a clear coat.

Does Duranar Coatings require a primer?
Yes. There are two primers available. One is a Flash primer (for wet on wet application) and the other a bake primer.

Are the Duranar Coatings available in a full gloss range?
No. Standard Duranar gloss spec is 25-35 on a 60-degree meter. For clear coat systems, the gloss is 30-40.

Can I have custom colors matched in PPG products?
Yes. PPG’s Color Services group can custom match color submittals.  Sample chips can also be requested.

Can I recoat Duranar Coatings?
Yes. Mild scuff sand required.

How thick should I apply Duranar Coatings?
The primer is applied to 0.20 – 0.30 mils D.F.T. (Dry Film Thickness) and the topcoat at 1.0 – 1.2 mils D.F.T. (If a clear coat is required it is applied at 1.0 mil D.F.T.)

At what temperature should I bake Duranar Coatings?
Duranar is baked at 475 degrees F for 10 minutes.

Does PPG offer a warranty?
Yes. PPG offers a comprehensive 20-year warranty for Duranar coatings.

What products does PPG have that meet the AAMA 2603 and 2604?
PPG offers several products for the residential market. Duracron and Polycron III are PPG’s acrylic and high solids polyester coatings. These coatings meet the AAMA 2603 specification.  PPG also offers Acrynar FX super durable fluoropolymers that meet the AAMA 2604 specification.
