PPG Glass Technology Center

The Glass Technology Center is located in Harmar Township, a suburban setting a short distance from Pittsburgh. Of the over 300 associates employed at the site, approximately one-third are involved in glass research and development. Other PPG groups such as Glass Engineering, Glass Quality Assurance, and various Flat Glass departments work together on technical initiatives. A small number of Fiber Glass Science & Technology associates are also housed at the Harmar Township location. Teamwork and Talent play a key role in this environment.

Among the amenities located at the site is a library resource center. It is staffed to provide assistance with searches, ordering of books, as well as providing timely communications on the most recent publications, papers and patents.

Weekly lunchtime seminars focus on work being done internally. They provide a forum for our scientists and engineers to communicate and exchange ideas. A technical series program of invited speakers from around the world, expose our minds to new state-of-the art concepts and challenges.

The health care center, headed by a full-time nurse, facilitates a wellness program and schedules on-site fitness classes.

Atrium being used as a meeting location

A full-service cafeteria provides soup, salads, sandwiches and a daily selection of hot entrees.

An atrium provides a light and airy atmosphere for informal meetings and lunchtime social gatherings.

No need to worry about parking. Ample free parking is provided within an area protected by a fence.

Team Work & Collaboration

Teamwork is emphasized within PPG. Many times projects require interactions not only with other teams within the Glass Technology Center, but also between the research centers. With the vast array of expertise in the research community, a great deal of synergy occurs.
For example, the development stages of a switchable-optics project for an automotive application involves synthetic and analytical collaboration with the Coatings Research Center at Allison Park, PA and device fabrication experience with the Chemicals Research Center located in Monroeville, PA. Each of these facilities is only 20 minutes from Harmar Township making it convenient for interacting one-on-one.

Scientists and Engineers also collaborate with a number of National Laboratories, universities, and other companies to help solve complex problems and generate ideas for new products and processes.
