Overview

In 1989, PPG bought the Monroeville facility that is now home to its Chemicals Technical Center from the Koppers Chemical Company. The primary objective was to complete consolidation of PPG's technical units in the Pittsburgh area, where PPG also maintains its corporate headquarters. PPG had previously operated its chemicals research and development laboratories in Barberton, Ohio, also the site of the PPG's first chemicals plant.

Today the Monroeville facility conducts an ambitious program of research. Improving the efficiency of PPG's chlor-alkali production is also an important focus of the Monroeville center. In addition to new discovery projects, specific research initiatives underway at Monroeville include:

Optical monomers, whose end uses include a full range of prescription and cosmetic eyewear lenses and form the basis for Transitions® photochromic lenses as well as an expanding family of variable-tint eyewear. Constant improvement of lens products is the key to long-term success.

Specialty precipitated amorphous silicas, used for tires, toothpaste, rubber reinforcement, paint and batteries. Research at Monroeville supports PPG's production of silicas at plants around the world.

Fine chemicals, a growing group of advanced intermediates based on PPG's expertise in phosgene production and use. Multi-step synthesis of advanced intermediates for pharmaceutical uses are an especially promising application for PPG's special capabilities in fine chemicals.
