PPG participates in 'essential2' campaign

September 20, 2005 - PPG and more than 120 other member companies of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) are kicking off the “essential2” (read as “essential to”) campaign this week.

Funded and managed by the trade association, whose members include leading companies in chemistry-related businesses, the essential2 public education campaign of the ACC promotes awareness of chemistry's place in American life. It will include national and local advertising as well as public relations efforts targeted to government officials, people working in the industry, business leaders and the general public.

“The central message of essential2 is clear and simple: Chemistry is essential to everything – our economy, our health, our safety and our quality of life,” according to Kevin Sullivan, PPG senior vice president, chemicals. “The goal of the essential2 initiative is to talk in one voice, industry-wide, about how our products enrich virtually every aspect of American life.”

Posters promoting the campaign are placed throughout the Monroeville, Pa., chemicals center and the Pittsburgh headquarters, among other PPG chemicals facilities. More information on the campaign is available through the American Chemistry Council.

Facts about the U.S. chemicals industry, according to the ACC:

  • Chemistry as a business is a $504 billion enterprise in the United States.

  • The chemicals industry accounts for 10 percent of all U.S. exports.

  • It directly employs nearly a million people in all 50 states.

  • One-quarter of all U.S. patents granted originate in the chemicals industry.

  • The industry as a whole is four times safer than the combined average of all U.S. manufacturing segments.
