Trivex lens material is awarded seal of acceptance for UV blockers

July 27, 2005 - Trivex has become the first lens material offered by multiple lens manufacturers to earn the Seal of Acceptance for ultraviolet absorbers/blockers from the American Optometric Association (AOA).

The seal ensures that any lens made from Trivex material provides the eye with significant protection from naturally occurring environmental ultraviolet (UV) radiation, according to John Liebenguth, PPG director of sales and marketing, optical materials. To earn such recognition, product samples must, in an independent analysis, block at least 99 percent of UV rays and at least 80 percent of radiant energy between 380 and 400 nanometers.

UV protection is one of a number of attractive features of Trivex lenses, which also offer wearers high optical quality, impact resistance and a thin, lightweight composition.

“We are delighted that Trivex material has been granted this recognition because in addition to offering UV protection – as demonstrated by the seal – it also provides other important benefits, such as impact resistance and optical clarity,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Weaver, director of AOA’s clinical care group.

Liebenguth also noted that eye-care professionals can leverage the seal as a valuable marketing tool when speaking to patients about the importance of choosing a lens that offers UV protection.

“Earning this recognition is an example of how Trivex material can also meet the stringent requirements of today’s eye-care professionals and patients, who demand a lens that can address performance, appearance and protection needs,” he said.
