PPG makes corporate gifts for Asian tsunami recovery
January 24, 2005 - PPG is donating more than $100,000 in corporate gifts for relief and recovery efforts after the recent earthquake and tsunami disasters in Asia.
"The unprecedented loss of life is incredibly saddening, especially the fact that as much as one-third of the dead are children and many surviving children are without parents," said Ray LeBoeuf, PPG chairman and chief executive officer. “PPG is donating close to $100,000 to the American and Canadian Red Cross to help the many people and areas affected so drastically by the disaster."
In addition, PPG is providing chemicals through its chlor-alkali business to help purify the water in affected areas.
LeBoeuf reminds U.S. employees, retirees and board members that donations to the American Red Cross’ International Response Fund made within 90 days after the Asian tragedy will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the PPG Industries Foundation, as following other declared disasters. Also, U.S. residents making donations by Jan. 31, 2005, can take advantage of recently passed tax legislation enabling them to write off tsunami-relief donations in the 2004 tax year.
"It is our sincerest hope that the collective efforts of everyone at PPG can play a role in helping that region begin its long, slow healing from the devastation," LeBoeuf said. "The Red Cross organizations have a real plan, both short-term and long-term, to handle disaster recovery – with 100 percent of every targeted donation going directly to tsunami relief and response during this crisis – and we are pleased to support those efforts."
