Safety & Health - Behavior Based Safety

PPG believes that workplace behaviors are major contributing factors to occupational safety performance. For that reason, a global Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program is a major component of our risk reduction activities.

PPG began its implementation of BBS in 1991. This BBS program has been expanded globally to a variety of functions outside of manufacturing including sales, research and development, retail stores, and distribution centers.

Currently there are BBS programs at 243 facilities in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States.

The key elements of PPG’s BBS process include increasing employee involvement, increasing risk awareness, and promoting facility leadership involvement in specific safety related activities.

PPG defines BBS as proactive methods that focus on the behaviors and risk exposures of the workers and work site interface. 

PPG uses these techniques within the framework of the BBS program: 

• peer-to-peer  
   
• supervisor-to-subordinate
   
• management coaching
   

The PPG approach to BBS includes:

• defining the risk exposure
   
• interacting with the employee
   
• collecting data to measure behaviors and workplace risks
   
• implementing risk reduction initiatives
