PPG Recognized by U.S. EPA Climate Leaders Program

As a part of its continued commitment to sustainable practices, PPG Industries has pledged to reduce its total energy intensity reduction goal by twenty-five percent from 2006 to 2016 and its global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by ten percent from 2006 to 2011. PPG committed to the reduction goal as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders program, which PPG joined in March 2007.

Climate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Partner companies commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of their greenhouse gas emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals, and annually reporting their progress to EPA. Through program participation, companies create a credible record of their accomplishments and receive EPA recognition as corporate environmental leaders.

PPG committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emission intensity from sources in the United States by 18 percent by 2012 from a 2002 baseline. It achieved this mark six years earlier than the projection date.

“Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through the Climate Leaders program demonstrates our corporate-wide commitment to improving the global environment and increasing the efficiency of our operations,” said James A. Trainham, PPG vice president, science and technology. “PPG is working to improve its performance in the U.S., and is extending its goals to its global operations.”

“By setting a long-term greenhouse gas reduction goal and committing to reducing its carbon footprint, PPG Industries is demonstrating corporate climate change leadership," said Robert J. Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator of EPA's Office of Air and Radiation.

The company is active in other environmental stewardship programs in addition to the Climate Leaders program. PPG has received numerous awards from the Wildlife Habitat Council for facility habitat development. As an Energy Star Partner, PPG utilizes Energy Management systems to measure energy utilization throughout its processes and sets specific goals and action plans to meet those energy reduction goals.
