On October 31, 2007, PPG’s new Tianjin manufacturing facility officially started its production. With great support from the Tianjin municipal government and the TEDA development zone, PPG further expanded its existing 40,000 square meters site with an additional investment of approximately 60,000 square meters, to meet the ever increasing requirement of clients. Government officials from the Tianjin TEDA Development Zone and several senior managers from PPG presented the inaugural ceremony. PPG Coatings (Tianjin) Co. Ltd, a wholly owned asset invested by PPG in Tianjin, acts as an extension of the existing plant which is located to the south of the new facility. In the first phase, USD 10 million has been invested to provide the necessary capacity for the manufacturing of consumer electronic product coatings and industrial coatings. These applications are based on the standard process of “feed-premix-packaging” and include production workshops, warehouses for raw materials and final products, and other facilities for public use. The design of the entire facility demonstrates PPG's dedication to energy saving, environmental protection and lean manufacturing, as all equipment is adapted to the future processing of water-borne coatings, thus ensuring an improved safety and environmentally friendly surrounding. In the coming years, PPG will further expand the facility, including space for a manufacturing workshop, warehouse, and a complex of office buildings. The production capacity of 70,000 tons a year upon the operation of the first phase will be increased to 100,000 tons after the completion of the scheduled new expansion. PPG Industries also initiated the Social Responsibility Program “PPG Environmentally Friendly Coatings Safeguard Children’s Health”. Under this program, PPG donated all interior and exterior coatings to the Tianjin Welfare Institute for rebuilding the recovery and teaching building, as well as the children’s fosterage rooms of the conserve base for children in Jinghai. PPG hopes, through the donation of environmentally friendly coatings, that children will be brought up between the walls of a healthy environment, where no potential hazard can be found. The Tianjin donation program is the first in a series of similar programs and will eventually expand to other cities.
